The Underground Railroad: Journey to Freedom plays on a PC or Mac computer through your Internet browser with the aid of a plug-in called "Sandstone." To play the game on a computer, you need three things:
The game does not yet work on mobile devices, but an app version of the game is coming soon in 2014.
To play The Underground Railroad: Journey to Freedom on a computer (see below for information about mobile devices), you must download and install the free Sandstone Player software on your computer via your web browser through an Internet connection. Sandstone is required to support the 3-D style interaction in the game. You should be prompted to download and install Sandstone the first time you try to play the game. You can also click here to find instructions for downloading Sandstone on a Mac or PC.
Google Chrome can be running in the background, even if you do not have a browser open. Here is how to change that: Open Google Chrome. Click the top-right "Customize and Control Google Chrome" icon Choose Settings Click "Show Advanced Settings" link at bottom. Scroll down to "System" options De-select (Un-check) "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed" Now, close Chrome, and try to install Sandstone again.
A mobile app version of the game will be launched soon (expected Spring 2014) in the iOS and Android (iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, etc.) app stores. Until then, you need a computer to play the game. The game currently will not work on a mobile browser.
The first time you play the game, all the models and sound files need to download, so it might take time, depending on your Internet speed. Be patient, it will complete. Subsequent replays will load much, much faster.
If the "Downloading" progress bar never goes past 0%, you might have a problem. You should try to close and restart your browser and then attempt to open the game again. If it still won't download, email us at email@example.com.
System Requirements for a PC:
Note: The game will NOT RUN on virtual machines.Mobile (iOS and Android):
The game does not run on mobile devices at this time. However, a mobile app version of the game will be launching soon (expected Spring 2014). Check back for updates on how to download the app from the iOS and Android (iTunes, Google Play, Amazon, etc.) app stores when the game becomes available. If the game won't start downloading, there are a few things that might be happening.
Common problems include:
The game's Options Menu (in the upper righthand corner of the game) includes Sound Options that allow players to control the music and special effects of the game. Use this menu to adjust your settings.

We have developed an Educator Guide to support using game-play to explore history with students in Grades 6-10.
The classic version of the Underground Railroad is still available here. However, the new game is based on the original and greatly expands upon the experience, so we encourage you to try it.
If you are getting an error message when you try to open the game in Google Chrome, you need to update to the latest version of the browser. The free download is available here. When you have the latest version of Google Chrome, you can play it in that browser.
